Product Summary
Construction and materials
CW Ohio, a brand by Cascade Wood Products, offers architectural and decorative glass windows and skylights. The construction and materials used in these products are designed for both aesthetic appeal and functional performance. While specific details on every model may vary, the general approach emphasizes quality materials and craftsmanship.
The core construction of CW Ohio windows and skylights typically involves robust framing and sash components. These are commonly manufactured from high-quality wood, chosen for its natural beauty, insulating properties, and ability to be intricately shaped for decorative designs. The wood is often treated or finished to ensure durability and resistance to environmental factors. For certain applications or design preferences, alternative frame materials may be incorporated to offer enhanced performance characteristics such as increased resistance to moisture or improved thermal efficiency.
Glass is a paramount material in these products, given their categorization as decorative glass architectural elements. CW Ohio utilizes a variety of glass types to achieve different visual and functional outcomes. This can include:
- Standard Insulated Glass Units (IGUs): For energy efficiency and thermal performance, double or triple-pane glass units are common. These consist of two or more panes of glass separated by a spacer, creating an insulating gas-filled chamber.
- Decorative Glass Options: This is a key differentiator for CW Ohio. These options can encompass a range of treatments and types:
- Stained Glass: Intricately designed pieces of colored glass held together by lead or zinc came, often forming detailed patterns or imagery.
- Leaded Glass: Similar to stained glass but may use clear or textured glass with lead came for a classic, patterned effect.
- Etched or Sandblasted Glass: Where patterns or designs are created by removing surface layers of the glass, providing translucency and visual interest.
- Textured or Patterned Glass: Glass with inherent surface textures that obscure vision or refract light in decorative ways.
- Low-E Coatings: Applied to glass surfaces to improve thermal performance by reflecting infrared light, reducing heat transfer.
- Tempered or Laminated Safety Glass: Used in areas where safety is a concern, such as doors or low-lying windows, to provide enhanced impact resistance and break into small, relatively harmless pieces or remain intact.
Hardware and sealing components are also integral to the construction, ensuring operability, weatherproofing, and longevity. These typically include high-quality metal hardware for opening and closing mechanisms, and durable weatherstripping and sealants to prevent air and water infiltration. The specific types of hardware and sealants will be chosen to complement the overall design and functional requirements of each window or skylight.
Frame Options
The CW Ohio collection from Cascade Wood Products offers a selection of high-quality windows and skylights, focusing on architectural and decorative glass applications. While specific frame material options are not detailed on the accessible product pages, the brand emphasizes craftsmanship and durability often associated with wood-based window and door products. For detailed specifications regarding frame construction, materials, and finishes available for CW Ohio products, further inquiry with the manufacturer would be necessary.
The product line is positioned within the broader category of Windows & Skylights, suggesting a focus on both natural light solutions and aesthetic architectural elements. The mention of "Architectural/Decorative Glass" implies that the CW Ohio offerings may include custom glass options, unique window designs, and features that contribute to the overall architectural character of a building. These aspects often go hand-in-hand with robust and aesthetically pleasing frame designs that can accommodate a variety of glass treatments and structural requirements.
Given the context of Cascade Wood Products, it's reasonable to infer that their CW Ohio line likely utilizes materials and construction methods that align with traditional and contemporary woodworking standards. This could encompass various wood species for frames, potentially with options for different finishes and treatments to suit diverse design needs and environmental considerations. However, without explicit product details on frame materials such as:
- Wood types (e.g., pine, fir, oak)
- Composite materials
- Clad options (e.g., aluminum or vinyl exteriors over a wood interior)
it is not possible to provide a definitive list of frame options. The emphasis on architectural and decorative glass suggests frames designed to support and complement these features, potentially allowing for larger glass expanses, intricate detailing, or specialized shapes.

Glass Options
CW Ohio by Cascade Wood Products offers a variety of decorative glass options to enhance the aesthetic appeal of their architectural glass products. These glass selections are designed to provide unique visual textures and light-filtering qualities, allowing for customization to suit diverse design preferences.
The available decorative glass types include:
- Patterned Glass: This category encompasses a range of textured glass surfaces that distort light and provide varying degrees of privacy. The patterns can introduce visual interest and a subtle decorative element to windows and skylights.
- Stained Glass: For a more traditional and artistic statement, stained glass is offered. This involves pieces of colored glass held together by leading, creating intricate designs and vibrant color compositions that are often a focal point in architectural applications.
- Etched Glass: Etching creates a frosted or matte effect on the glass surface, achieved through chemical or abrasive processes. This results in a sophisticated and translucent finish that can be applied in various patterns or as a solid frosted pane for privacy and decorative appeal.
- Beveled Glass: Beveled glass features a ground and polished edge at an angle, which refracts light and creates a prismatic effect. This technique adds a touch of elegance and dimensionality to glass elements.
- Leaded Glass: Similar to stained glass, leaded glass involves assembling individual glass panes with lead came. This method is often used for creating geometric patterns or replicating historical architectural styles.
These glass options are available for use in a range of CW Ohio architectural and decorative glass applications, allowing for significant personalization in both residential and commercial projects. Each type of glass offers distinct visual and functional characteristics, from privacy and light diffusion to decorative artistry and historical replication.

Price Tier
Cascade Wood Products, under the CW Ohio brand, offers a range of window and skylight options that span across multiple market positions, catering to diverse project needs and aesthetic preferences. Understanding these tiers is key to making an informed selection for your home.
Market Position: Mid-Range ($$) to Premium ($$$)
How It Compares: Compared to budget-friendly vinyl windows, CW Ohio's offerings provide enhanced material quality and design flexibility, justifying a higher price point. Moving up to their luxury tier introduces more specialized glass options and potentially custom configurations, which represent a significant step in both performance and cost.
Key Value Drivers:
- Material Composition: Primarily crafted from wood, offering superior insulation and a natural aesthetic. Higher tiers may feature premium wood species or more advanced finishing techniques for enhanced durability and appearance.
- Longevity and Warranty: Generally built for longevity, often exceeding the lifespan of lower-tier alternatives. Specific warranty details, particularly for glass and finish, will vary by product line and should be reviewed for precise coverage.
- Installation Labor Complexity: Wood windows can sometimes require more intricate installation due to their weight and the need for precise sealing, which can influence labor costs compared to lighter materials.
- Aesthetic Options: A broader palette of colors, finishes, and hardware options are available as you move up the tiers, allowing for greater customization to match architectural styles.
Best Suited For: The Mid-Range ($$) options are well-suited for homeowners seeking a significant upgrade in aesthetics and energy efficiency from standard vinyl, ideal for remodels or new builds where quality is a priority without venturing into the highest luxury segment. The Premium ($$$) tier is best for homeowners investing in a "forever home" or a high-end renovation where lasting beauty, superior performance, and detailed customization are paramount.

The primary frame materials available from JELD-WEN include:
- Wood: For those seeking a classic and natural look, JELD-WEN provides high-quality wood frames. These frames offer excellent insulation properties and can be painted or stained to match existing decor. Wood frames are a popular choice for traditional and historic homes, offering timeless beauty and a warm aesthetic.
- Vinyl: Vinyl frames are a practical and low-maintenance option. They are known for their excellent energy efficiency, helping to reduce heating and cooling costs. Vinyl is resistant to rot, corrosion, and fading, making it a durable choice for various climates. JELD-WEN vinyl frames are available in a selection of colors to suit different exterior designs.

The aluminum cladding protects the wood from the elements, preventing warping, rotting, and insect damage, while still allowing for a warm and inviting interior wood finish.
- Fiberglass: Fiberglass frames offer superior strength, durability, and energy efficiency. They are highly resistant to expansion and contraction due to temperature changes, which helps maintain a tight seal and prevent drafts. Fiberglass frames can mimic the look of wood without the associated maintenance requirements and are available in various finishes.
The specific frame options available may vary depending on the window style selected from JELD-WEN's extensive collection, which includes Awning, Casement, Double Hung, Single Hung, Sliding Horizontal, Garden, Fixed, Radius & Geometric, Tilt-Turn, Bay, and Bow windows.
Glass Options
JELD-WEN offers a variety of glass options to enhance the performance, aesthetics, and energy efficiency of their windows. These options are designed to meet diverse needs, from improved insulation to enhanced privacy and safety.
Standard Glass
All JELD-WEN windows come with standard clear glass, providing unobstructed views and natural light. This glass is a reliable choice for general use, offering clarity and durability.
Energy-Efficient Glass Packages
JELD-WEN provides several energy-efficient glass packages to help reduce energy consumption and improve comfort:
- Low-E Glass: This is a foundational upgrade for energy efficiency. Low-E (Low-Emissivity) coatings are microscopically thin and virtually invisible. They reflect infrared light (heat) while allowing visible light to pass through. In winter, this helps keep heat inside your home, reducing heating costs. In summer, it reflects the sun's heat away, minimizing cooling needs.
- Argon Gas Fill: An inert gas, argon is denser than air and is used to fill the space between glass panes in double- and triple-pane windows. Argon gas acts as an additional insulator, further reducing heat transfer and improving the overall energy performance of the window.
- Double-Pane (Insulated Glass Units - IGUs): These units consist of two panes of glass separated by a spacer, creating an insulating air or gas-filled gap. This is a standard upgrade for improved thermal performance compared to single-pane windows.
- Triple-Pane (IGUs): Offering the highest level of energy efficiency, triple-pane windows feature three panes of glass with two insulating gaps. This configuration significantly reduces heat transfer, making them ideal for extreme climates or for homeowners looking to maximize energy savings.
- SmartSun™ Glass: This is a specific Low-E coating offered by JELD-WEN that is engineered to block significantly more solar heat gain while still allowing plenty of visible light to enter your home. It's particularly beneficial in warmer climates or for windows that receive direct, intense sunlight.
Decorative and Privacy Glass
For areas where privacy or a decorative touch is desired, JELD-WEN offers:
- Obscure Glass: This type of glass is designed to obscure vision while still allowing light to pass through. It's an excellent choice for bathrooms, entry doors, or any area where privacy is a priority without sacrificing natural light.
- Tinted Glass: Available in various colors, tinted glass can reduce glare and solar heat gain. It also adds a distinct aesthetic element to the window and the home's exterior.
Safety and Security Glass
JELD-WEN also offers glass options that enhance safety and security:
- Tempered Glass: Also known as safety glass, tempered glass is heat-treated to be stronger than standard glass. If it breaks, it shatters into small, relatively harmless pieces, reducing the risk of injury. This is often required in certain applications by building codes.
- Laminated Glass: Composed of two or more panes of glass bonded together with an interlayer (typically PVB), laminated glass offers enhanced security and safety. If broken, the glass fragments adhere to the interlayer, holding the pane together and providing a barrier against intrusion and falling glass. It also offers improved sound dampening properties.
The specific glass options available may vary depending on the JELD-WEN window product line and style chosen.
Options-Styles
JELD-WEN offers a diverse range of style options to complement any architectural design and homeowner preference for their windows and skylights.
The following window styles are available:
- Awning Windows: These windows hinge at the top and open outward, providing excellent ventilation and protection from rain.
- Casement Windows: Hinged at the side, casement windows crank open outward, offering unobstructed views and efficient ventilation.
- Double Hung Windows: Featuring two operable sashes that slide up and down independently, allowing for ventilation from both the top and bottom.
- Single Hung Windows: Similar to double hung, but only the bottom sash slides upward for ventilation.
- Sliding Horizontal Windows: These windows slide open from side to side, ideal for areas where outward or upward opening is not feasible.

- Fixed Windows: Also known as picture windows, these do not open and are designed purely for light and views.
- Radius & Geometric Windows: Offering custom shapes and sizes, these windows add unique architectural interest.
- Tilt-Turn Windows: These versatile windows can swing inward for cleaning or tilt inward from the top for ventilation.
- Bay Windows: These windows project outward from the building, creating a larger interior space and offering panoramic views.
- Bow Windows: Similar to bay windows, bow windows feature a more curved, multi-panel design that also projects outward.

Glass Options
Kolbe Windows & Doors offers a variety of glass options to enhance the performance, aesthetics, and comfort of their windows. These options cater to different needs, from energy efficiency and noise reduction to UV protection and privacy.
The core glass offering is typically standard clear glass. However, Kolbe provides several enhancements and specialized glass types:
-
Low E Glass (Low Emissivity): This is a popular choice for energy efficiency. Low E coatings are microscopically thin and virtually invisible, but they significantly improve a window's thermal performance. They work by reflecting infrared light (heat) while allowing visible light to pass through.
- LoE-366®: This is a high-performance, all-weather, triple-silver-coated low E glass designed to provide excellent solar control and thermal insulation in all climates. It blocks a significant portion of solar heat gain in the summer while keeping heat inside during the winter. It also reduces fading of interior furnishings by blocking harmful UV rays.
- LoE-270®: Another energy-efficient option, LoE-270® offers good solar control and thermal insulation, making it suitable for various climates. It also provides UV protection.
- LoE-170®: This option focuses on thermal insulation, allowing more solar heat to enter during the winter months, which can be beneficial in colder climates for passive solar heating. It also offers UV protection.
- Argon or Krypton Gas Fills: In addition to the low E coatings, many Kolbe windows can be ordered with insulated glass units filled with argon or krypton gas. These inert gases are denser than air and provide an additional layer of insulation between the glass panes, further improving energy efficiency. Krypton gas is denser than argon and offers even better insulating performance, especially in thinner air gaps.
-
Tinted Glass: For enhanced solar control and privacy, Kolbe offers tinted glass options. These tints reduce the amount of solar heat gain and glare entering the building, contributing to a cooler interior. Common tints include:

Obscure and Frosted Glass: These options are primarily for privacy.
- Obscure Glass: This type of glass diffuses light and provides a high level of privacy while still allowing natural light to enter. Different patterns are available for varying degrees of obscurity.
- Frosted Glass: Achieved through an etching process, frosted glass offers a similar level of privacy to obscure glass, with a smooth, satin-like finish.
- Tempered Glass: Tempered glass is a safety glass that is four to five times stronger than standard annealed glass. When it breaks, it shatters into small, relatively harmless pebble-like pieces, reducing the risk of injury. It is often required by building codes in specific locations, such as doors, bathrooms, and areas near the floor.
- Laminated Glass: Laminated glass consists of two or more panes of glass bonded together with a layer of plastic interlayer (typically PVB). This construction provides enhanced safety and security. If broken, the glass fragments adhere to the interlayer, keeping the pane intact and preventing dangerous shards from falling. Laminated glass also offers improved sound insulation and UV protection.
- Decorative Glass: Kolbe may offer decorative glass options for specific architectural styles or aesthetic preferences, which can include etched patterns or specialized finishes.
These glass options can often be combined to achieve specific performance goals. For instance, a window can be ordered with a Low E coating, gas fill, and a specific tint, or with tempered glass for safety and a Low E coating for energy efficiency.
